Big Green Egg vs. Kamado Joe: What’s the Real Difference?
While both grills are built from high-grade, NASA-grade insulating ceramics that lock in heat, smoke, and moisture, they take very different approaches to what comes out of the box.
1. The Out-of-the-Box Philosophy
Big Green Egg: The "Egg" is iconic and cooks beautifully, but it follows a modular approach. The base price usually gets you just the ceramic shell. Essential components—like the nest (stand), side shelves, and deflector stones for slow cooking—must be purchased separately as add-ons.
Kamado Joe: Kamado Joe revolutionized the market by including everything you need to start cooking on day one. Their innovative Divide & Conquer® flexible multi-level cooking system, heavy-duty cart, and patented Ash Drawer are all included as standard.
2. Innovation and Features
Kamado Joe focuses heavily on solving the traditional hassles of charcoal cooking. Their newer models feature the Air Lift Hinge (which allows you to lift a heavy lid with a single finger) and the Kontrol Tower top vent, which prevents rain from getting into the grill during a classic British summer downpour.
How Easy is it to Cook on a Kamado-Style BBQ?
One of the most common questions we get asked in our showroom near Eastleigh is: "Are ceramic grills hard to control if you’re used to gas?"
The short answer is no, they are incredibly forgiving, but they do require a slight shift in mindset.
Unmatched Temperature Stability: Because the thick ceramic walls retain heat so efficiently, once you lock in your temperature using the top and bottom air vents, a kamado will hold that exact temperature for 12+ hours without you needing to touch it.
The Learning Curve: The golden rule of kamado cooking is that it is much easier to make a ceramic grill hotter than it is to cool it down. Because the ceramics hold heat so well, if you let your charcoal get too wild early on, it takes time to bring the temperature back down.
Moisture Retention: Unlike traditional steel kettles or gas grills that constantly vent out dry air, a ceramic grill keeps the moisture locked inside. This makes it almost impossible to dry out a brisket, pork shoulder, or Sunday roast chicken.
Why You Need to Visit a BBQ Showroom Before You Buy
Choosing between a Kamado Joe Classic or a Big Green Egg Large isn’t just about looking at a spec sheet—it’s about lifestyle and space. Seeing a live unit in person allows you to answer the practical questions:
Is the Big Joe or Classic size right for my family and entertaining needs?
How heavy is the lid, and can I easily operate the hinge system?
How does the digital technology on the new Konnected Joe actually work in practice?
At Outdoor BBQ Kitchens, we carry a comprehensive display of premium grills. We don't just ship boxes from a distant warehouse; our team unboxes, builds, and delivers these units directly into gardens across Southampton, Winchester, and the wider Hampshire region.
